You may be wondering why Center Grove is utilizing the IMPACT Center for this food distribution. Public school districts must follow government rules for the use of Food Service funds. Those rules do not allow school districts with a Free/Reduced population of less than 50% (Center Grove is around 21%) to use Food Service funds for food distribution outside of school day meals for families other than those who qualify for Free/Reduced meals. If we followed these rules, we would exclude so many families experiencing financial hardship during these unprecedented times that normally would not qualify for assistance. We firmly believe all families should have access to these food items if they are in need. The plan announced today follows rules that allow us to make purchases from our vendors and donate those items to a community-based food distribution site.
We believe this plan will provide the greatest impact on our families. Any family in need, even those who have not been certified for Free/Reduced meals, may receive food assistance from the IMPACT Center distribution, as long as they live in Johnson County.
