    Police ExperienceOfficer Jay Smallwood
    Officer Jay Smallwood started his law enforcement career in 2011 at the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department as a reserve officer. While there, he successfully completed the reserve academy from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and received the Jeffery B. Shaw award for Bravery, Leadership, and Strong work ethic. In 2013, he accepted a full-time position at the Miami County Sheriff’s Department as a road deputy. In 2015, he transferred to Converse Police Department as the Chief Deputy where he spearheaded a successful neighborhood watch program that led to numerous drug and theft arrests. While working in Converse, from 2016-2021, he served as the School Resource Officer for Peru Community Schools.
     
    Education
    Officer Smallwood graduated from Peru High School in 1997 and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 2013.
     
    While at the Academy, he was recognized for his expert marksmanship with all firearms. He completed the National Association of School Resource Officers course in 2018 and became certified as a School Safety Specialist in 2019.

    Athletics
    While at Peru High School, Officer Smallwood played basketball, football, and ran track. He was a two-time Sectional Dunk Champion, two-time Conference High Jump winner (10th best high jumper for Peru High School), and won Sectional in the 100-meter hurdle relays.

    After high school, Officer Smallwood raced Motocross for 13 years, placing 10th in his class in the state of Indiana. He boxed for 10 years and fought in the Indiana Golden Gloves tournament where he placed 3rd in his weight class.

    Officer Smallwood's hobbies include kayaking and fishing with his daughter, Brielle Smallwood, and fiancé, Nicolle Charles. He enjoys watching motocross races, the Chicago Cubs, and Notre Dame Football.
