Music to My Ears

“Music to My Ears,” the title of my Lilly Fellowship 2010 Teacher Creativity Grant, perfectly describes my summer study and renewal. Through this grant, I learned about pipe organ design and construction through on-line sites, books, and spending time observing and learning from three pipe organ builders. I also improved my keyboarding skills by taking organ lessons. I enhanced my performance level by working on both hand and foot techniques. The music truly came to my ears when I heard professional performances on 44 different pipe organs throughout the summer.
I attended the American Guild of Organists Convention in Washington D.C. and heard some of our nation’s best organists. Their outstanding skills, interpretations of music, and ability to combine the voices of the pipe organ led to perfect performances. The words of the American Guild of Organists’ chaplain, Rev. Dr. Thomas H. Troeger, sum up the incredible joy I gained from my study: “Every time you make music, you are calling people back to the better spirits of their nature.”
