"Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go."
    - E.L. Doctorow
Learning to effectively communicate through writing is a process that we devote a great deal of time to in fifth grade. It is our belief that writing is a tool for learning, and the ability to use written words to demonstrate knowledge and as a form of expression is imperative. Throughout the school year, the students will use the 6 Traits Writing Framework as a means of improving their writing craft and also to develop a common language to refer to characteristics of writing. A wide variety of children's literature, specifically picture books, will be used to launch different writing activities. Additionally, all fifth grade students in the Center Grove School District will craft a variety of writing pieces, that will include:
    • Narrative
    • Argument
    • Informational
    • Memoir

Moreover, in our classrooms, writing will be incorporated into all content areas, such as reading, science, social studies, and even math. Our students will learn early on that effective writing must take place in all areas of learning, not just writing class!

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.
