Gradebook Changes (Middle School)
Center Grove will implement a revised grading process for Grades 6-8 for the 2024-25 School Year. A 14-point scale will be used in the gradebook for assignments, tests, labs, etc. This scale makes proportional the A-F ranges. A student's scores will average and convert to a final letter grade on a student's report card. From the final letter grades, GPA will still be calculated on our 4-point scale, which matches other high schools, colleges, and universities.
This new process will:
- Eliminate inequities in term grade calculations.
- Eliminate the "power of a zero" on a 100 point scale in final grade calculation.
- Ensure our grading practices align between teachers and schools.
This change supports creating equitable structures for calculating grades and eliminating the power of zero in a traditional 100-point scale. Along with building-level supports for students' work completion, this change focuses our practices on grading accuracy and instilling a growth mindset.
Canvas will not calculate the grade in the class. Skyward will calculate the student’s total grade for the class.

The Power of Zero
Understanding the 14-Point Scale
Center Grove will add one step to the calculation of grades. This step converts grades to a 14-Point Scale. This step will occur automatically in Skyward.
GRADING STEPS
- Teacher scores assignment (Example: 8 of 10 answers are correct)
- Skyward determines percentage correct (Example: 8 of 10 = 80% correct)
- Skyward converts percentage to 14-Point Scale
- Skyward weights 14-Point value based on category
- Skyward averages the weighted values for each category
- Skyward sums category averages plus exam score to determine final grade for course
GRADEBOOK CATEGORIES
Scores will be placed into one of four common categories. Each category is weighted based on importance. (Example: Tests are weighted more heavily than quizzes or homework.)
- Performance = 50%
- Practice = 20%
- Progress = 30%
- Preparation = 0%
