National Merit Scholars 2017
Finalists
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named eight Center Grove High School seniors National Merit Finalists. The students are among 7,500 Finalists nationwide.
The National Merit Finalists in Center Grove this year are: Sydney Castellanos, Peter Golder, Megan Libke, Max Newport, Emily Simon, Aaron Thielmeyer, Ashley Varney, and Akul Vijayvargiya. They were chosen from among 15,000 Semifinalists who submitted a detailed application and provided information about their academic records, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received. They must also have outstanding academic records throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by an official from their high schools and submit essays and SAT scores.
The CGCSC Board of School Trustees honored the finalists at their April 20, 2017 meeting.
The 2017 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in a series of four nationwide news releases through July. More information on the National Merit Scholarship Program is available at nationalmerit.org.
Semifinalists
Eight Center Grove High School students are semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship program. Students named semifinalists are:

- Sarah Varney
- Akul Vijayvargiya
The National Merit Scholarship Committee NMSC selects approximately 16,000 finalists from across the country to compete for National Merit Scholarship Awards. Students are recognized based on their PSAT scores. To become a finalist, the student and their high school must submit a detailed application and provide information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and awards received.
Finalists will be selected in the spring.
