Excerpt from Teacher of the Year application

To me, teaching is important because:

Teaching is important because each day I am given the opportunity to shape the lives of my students by encouraging, teaching, supporting, and challenging them to be confident and successful both in my classroom and in life.  As teachers, we are given so many opportunities to instill in our students not only a love of learning, but a love of wanting to learn.  I teach my students that we are all unique individuals, and we celebrate our differences and our accomplishments as a classroom family.

I teach my students to challenge themselves, to strive to reach their potential in everything they do, and to trust themselves first and foremost.  My goal each year is to give my students the confidence and the desire to want to succeed, to celebrate all successes with every student, and to show my students respect and love each and every day that they will in return show others.  Nothing gives me greater joy than seeing my students grow each year in their desire to want to learn, care, and respect not only in our classroom, but in our school and beyond.

Teaching has given me more joy than I imagined when I began over 19 years ago.  As the demands have increased, also my desire to want to continue to learn and grow has increased.  Teaching is not a profession; it is a life, and I am thankful I have been blessed with the opportunity to guide and shape the lives of so many students.
