To me, teaching is important because...
To me, teaching is important because of all the endless opportunities that are offered to both students and teachers. Throughout my forty-year teaching career, I believe I have had a hand in helping numerous students to achieve their future goals. Besides teaching the rigorous standards across the curriculum, I often share problem-solving skills, wisdom, and humor with my students. In return, I have been blessed with meeting so many wonderful children that have grown into long-lasting friendships. This, in turn, has made me develop into a better person. I strive to provide a classroom atmosphere that creates a second home and family for my students. In order for each student to experience this type of setting, I believe each student must take ownership and responsibility for their learning. However, before this occurs, I feel that it is essential to form positive, respectful, and trustful relationships between each student and myself. Individual students need to understand my interest in each one of them. This is the reason that I attend my students’ birthday parties, church plays, sporting events, and any other invitations that I receive. By showing a concern in a student’s life away from school, each individual student is able to more fully experience this second family relationship. Often, the students can share these activities with the rest of the class, and this trust-based relationship can spread throughout our second home. After the trust has been established, students then come full circle in taking ownership and responsibility for their learning. The sky becomes the limit for them. This is when my pride soars for my students.

My career goal over the past forty years has been to be an effective and caring teacher, a communicator, and a cheerleader while exposing students to a variety of information and ways to solve academic and social problems. Though I will always be faced with new challenges, my desire as an educator is that I will be remembered as one who made a difference in a child’s life.
