• Semester Grade Calculation

Semester grades in a class are not calculated based on the average of the percentages for the nine weeks and the semester exam. They are calculated using a weighted average based on the letter grades for the nine weeks grading periods and the semester exam. The procedure below explains how this is done.

    Step 1

Determine the point value (table below) for the first nine week, second nine weeks and the final exam.

    Grade GPA Pts
    A- 4.00
    A- 3.67
    B+ 3.33
    B 3.00
    B- 2.67
    C+ 2.33
    C 2.00
    C- 1.67
    D+ 1.33
    D 1.00
    D- 0.67
    F 0.00

    Step 2

Based on the values determined in step 1, calculate the average grade for the semester using the formula given below.

First Nine Week Grade x 2

Second Nine Week Grade x 2

    Semester Exam Grade x 1

    Sum of the above values/5

    Example:

    First Nine Weeks: B-
    2.67 x 2 = 5.34

    Second Nine Weeks: B+
    3.33 x 2 = 6.66

    Semester Exam: C
    2.00 x 1 = 2.00

    5.34 + 6.66 + 2.00 = 14.00
    14/5 = 2.800

    Step 3

Use the table below to determine the letter grade equivalent based on the average grade determined in step 2.

    Grade GPA Range
    A 4.000-3.835
    A- 3.834-3.495
    B+ 3.494-3.165
    B 3.164-2.835
    B- 2.834-2.495
    C+ 2.494-2.165
    C 2.164-1.835
    C- 1.834-1.495
    D+ 1.494-1.165
    D 1.164-0.835
    D- 0.834-0.670
    F 0.669-0.000

Based on the example used in step 2:

    2.800 = B- (2.834-2.495)
