JEFFREY PETERSONCenter Grove Middle School North2013-14 Teacher of the YearSubject and Grade Level: Science, 8th GradeYears of Experience: 13Teaching is important to me because: Teaching is important to present opportunities for real learning to happen. One of my main goals as a teacher is to increase the number of inquiry-based learning opportunities for my students in order to help them better understand the process of science. This resulted in the addition of several projects which allow students to create their own labs and become a self-directed explorer of science instead of following someone else's recipe for learning. I am blessed to teach in a very technology rich environment at Center Grove. The effective use of technology and this self-direct process of learning science provide my students a lifelong, intellectual process for gaining meaning and understanding across all subject areas. In short, the measure of my teaching effectiveness is when my students do not need me and are able to teach themselves.
