Center Grove dedicates Walnut Grove Elementary

WGES Students lead the Pledge of Allegiance

(August 3, 2019) – Nearly 100 people came together on Saturday, August 3, 2019 to dedicate Center Grove Community School Corporation’s (CGCSC) newest school, Walnut Grove Elementary. Those gathered heard from Carol Tumey, President, CGCSC Board of School Trustees; Dr. Rich Arkanoff, Superintendent, CGCSC; Terry Lancer, Partner, Lancer+Beebe Architects; and Brian Proctor, Principal, Walnut Grove Elementary.

“As a school board, the growth and stewardship of our facilities is a priority,” Mrs. Tumey told the crowd. “Those of us on the board today and many boards before us have worked to prioritize and plan for the future of our school corporation. We are extremely proud that the bonds sold to build this school did not impact our tax rate.”

"This building will be used by thousands of students for many, many years," said Dr. Arkanoff. "It is designed to inspire learning and creative thinking, while being safe, functional, and fiscally responsible."

Walnut Grove features innovative learning spaces designed to provide flexibility for instruction, while creating a fun and engaging learning environment for students of today and tomorrow. The school is built to be safe, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly. Among the safety features are a secure vestibule at the main entrance, reinforced severe weather refuge areas, and electronic locks on classroom doors. Walnut Grove boasts the district’s first solar array, geothermal heating and cooling, and other features to reduce energy and paper consumption. The prairie-themed landscaping around the school utilizes native grasses and plants, which reduces maintenance costs and allows for the preservation of wildlife habitats in the area.

"We did a lot of research and pulled together teams of teachers and leaders in each area to provide input on designs for everything from classrooms and shared spaces to lunchrooms and traffic flow," said Brian Proctor. "We are all thankful for the School Board and our community for providing us with such a wonderful building for our students."
