Schools honor veterans

(November 11, 2019) - Sugar Grove Elementary School celebrated their veterans Monday, November 11 with a reception, school program, and an honor parade through the school. Students led the program with the Pledge of Allegiance and patriotic songs. The students then lined the halls waving American flags, while thanking those who have and are currently serving.
"We need heroes. And whether you've got a medal around your neck or not everyone of you is a hero to these kids and to all of our community and for that we thank you. We thank you for being here today and we honor your service," Mark Koenig, Sugar Grove music teacher and Veterans Day committee member, shared with the audience.
Center Grove High School also celebrated Veterans Day on Monday, November 11by hosting a guest speaker, Staff Sgt. John Davis. Davis spoke of his time in the Army with many stories and advice for the student body on life and how to continue to remember and thank those in our military.
Staff Sgt. Davis graduated from George Washington High School in 1972. He enlisted in 1983 where he served with the Army National Guard. He was stationed at Leonardwood, MO, Fort Harrison, IN and Fort Riley, KS.
While Staff Sgt. Davis was attending Vincennes University, he majored in history, received Basic and Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer schooling, as well as search and rescue training.
He encouraged the audience to take the time thank veterans for their service.
Staff Sgt. Davis is currently in the Guard Reserve as a Public Relations Non-Commissioned Officer. He says that being a soldier in the United States Army is one of the most memorable experiences in his life.
Center Grove Elementary, North Grove Elementary, and Maple Grove Elementary also held programs on Monday, November 11 to honor veterans. Pleasant Grove observed the day with a silent dismissal. Walnut Grove also observed a silent dismissal and held classroom events throughout the day.
Middle School North and Middle School Central held Veterans Day programs on November 7 and November 8.
